leadership for state legislators throughout the country. president obama may be restricted in terms of what he can do by executive order but we are anxious to see what can be implemented by the executive branch and to realize that america, this is more in terms of common sense. when we have something that is hurting our children so much and killing youngsters around the country, it is time for all of the groups to come together and not to argue with each other because this is not constitutional rights. this is common sense. we know that those people that incorporated the right to bear arms was not talking about the slaughter of children that's happened in newtown, connecticut. so i am so sorry to see that the state legislator there that spoke earlier has made this a personal political issue, but i'm so proud that new york state has moved forward. >> if you're proud of what new york has done, obviously there's not going to be any perfect policy or perfect law that everybody's going to agree on from both sides saying that this is key perfection but do you think that new york and what has

of the country and not let this stuff come up for a vote? >> what do you think the white house's assessment is of that what you just laid out? what do you expect from president obama tomorrow in terms of a balance between things he can do himself and things he would need congress to do? >> well, he is going to do as much as he can to enforce existing law and do things through executive orders. no, the gun owners don't have to fear he is not going to take guns away through executive orders. it's that fear, that paranoia being spread by the nra and others. but he is going to take executive action. but i think he is going to propose a very robust plan from everything i hear, including an assault weapons ban. that seems to be the measure that has the most difficulty. one of the things i think they're going to propose, by the way, is to make it a lot easier to collect data on gun violence, on people who die in violence. the nra has blocked even the collection of data. so we can't know what is going on. so we can't come up with the right solutions. i hope that is part of his package, a

and certainly president obama with their strength of the office and going around the country and talking to americans which basically agree with the president, it's going to be up to the people across the country to talk to their members of congress to make sure that we and get this done. this can save lives. we've saw that. when the large magazine clips, which i've been reintroducing ever since 204, when that ban was in place, we did not see these magazines out on the streets. and they were very expensive because they were rare. we can do that again to cut that down. we're not going to be taking away anyone's right to own a gun. the supreme court already did that. but with the president laying out what he did, in a very holistic way, by the way, by working with our schools, making sure we have community policing, have psychologists. it's going to be up to the schools to make the decision on what they want, but we should be there to help them. ifwe can't protect our children from school or someone going to the movies, i think that has hit the heart of everybody in this country. g

president obama lay out what certainly can be called the most aggressive and sweeping gun control measures in many decades. n this country. nearly two dozen in all. a combination of executive orders and proposals which will have to go through congress. those include universal background checks and also a renewed ban on military style assault weapons. including a limit on high capacity magazines. the president knows it will not be easy to do this task, saying, it will be difficult. this will be difficult. yet they are common sense proposals, in his words. eamon javers is live at the white house. he's been listening in. eamon, the president knows it's not going to be easy. what are the chances any of these proposals get through congress? >> reporter: well, scott, these were solemn and somber remarks from the president here as you saw, surrounded by some of the families of those affected by gun violence. but also as you say, leaven with a doze of political reality here. a lot of those here in washington think a renewal of the assault weapons ban is dead on arrival in the house of rep
